WHAT IS “I DRIVE SAFELY LIBERIA”?

“I Drive Safely Liberia” is an online platform designed to brings together the expertise of private sector organizations (Liberia Driver Training Schools Association, LDTSA) the regulatory/oversight  (Ministry of Transport, MoT/Road Safety Secretarial RSS) (Ministry of Justice, MoJ/Liberia National Police, LNP), Ministry of Public Works, MPW/ Ministry of Education, MoE) of the Liberian government, agencies responsible transportation, law enforcement, infrastructure development and human resource development.

 After sixteen (16) years of extensive private sector intervention in Liberia’s public safety challenges in the road transport sector of Liberia, where thousands of citizens and visitors of Liberia have been victims, with many left with lifetime disabilities, increasing poverty, and challenging population growth because of poor systems.

“I Drive Safely Liberia” is designed to evaluate new and old drivers in Liberia. Its primary purpose is to ensure that all applicants for a Liberia driver’s license possess a solid understanding of the country’s traffic regulations and safe driving practices.  (Exceptions of foreign License holders as per Liberia traffic regulations are documented)

The system is formed after established online driver’s education services from the United States, it is aimed to operates within a public-private partnership (PPP) framework, if endorsed will involve the people, international partners that have engaged this road epidemic since the cessation of Liberia fourteen (14) years of civil war and transition to a democratic society.  

This service is to serves multiple functions. First, it acts as a standardized evaluation tool, assessing each applicant’s knowledge and readiness to drive safely.

“I Drive Safely Liberia” aims to reduce the number of road accidents worsened by unqualified or illegal drivers. Additionally, it supports driver education providers by offering a consistent curriculum and testing framework that reflects contemporary road safety standards, ending the poor driver licensing and insurance of Liberia over the last four plus decades, where individuals would just walk in and out with a Liberia driver’s license, putting the public at high risk.

“I Drive Safely Liberia” is not just an online driver education service; it is an integrated approach to modernize driver licensing in Liberia, promote road safety, and ultimately help protect the lives of road users by ensuring that those who gain a license are adequately prepared for the challenges of the road.

“I Drive Safely Liberia” is advancing to all stakeholders a proposal to adapt the new process to apply for or renew a driver’s license in Liberia will typically need to:

  • Complete a driver’s education course from any one of the MoT/MoE-accredited institutions.
  • Every applicant who reads and writes passes a knowledge evaluation of classroom training via computer or in person.
  • Every applicant undergoes a practical driving test for behind-the-wheel training.
